Aloho again Peeps!
So, Vicki & I left the crazy town of Waikiki on Monday Morning and spent three nights at 'Backpackers' in the North Shore. In terms of cleanliness the hostel was a slight improvement on the last place however the people were a vast improvement!! We were in an apartment with three bedrooms and our roomies were as follows;
Matt & McKenlie from the USA
Tatayana, Gem & Jools from Canada
Angela (this might not actually be her name but I've forgotten, she only spent 1 night so this is my excuse!) from Germany
We've had a great time together being roomies, in particular last night, when the hostel put on a $7 all you can barbecue! We enjoyed several burgers and several litres of White Zinfadel and spent the evening with a lovely couple from San Francisco. It was the guy's 60th bday so he shared a bottle of champagne with us and we bought some yummy chocolates to have with it!! We were all quite merry by the time we went to bed!
Our days in North Shore were spent shopping (surprise surprise!) and sunbathing!! We also visited Pipeline (part of Sunset beach), which is known as having some of the world's most challenging and epic waves! The waves are so steep that the tops are thrown forward as they break, forming an almost perfect tube or "pipeline" in surfer terminology! Check me out! When we visited however, the waves were tiny so we were a little disappointed but hey we can say we've been there and that's something in itself!!
Today, we have returned to Waikiki (to a nice hostel) and have been on a major shopping spree,.. (I love shopping I do!) We then set off to walk up Diamond Head which for those of you that don't know is the most famous volcanic crater in the world!
Anyway what we didn't realise was that the gates shut at 6pm as they advise you to allow 1 hour to get to the top and half an hour to get down! We arrived at 4.50pm, (4.30pm was the cut off time) and so we pleaded with the guy at the desk to let us up, we promised we would turn back at 5.30pm even if we hadn't made it to the top. The english charm worked a treat and he agreed-jolly nice man!
As we began the climb we immediately regretted the Mcdonalds we had eaten just 1 hour earlier & at one point I thought I'd be seeing my big mac again but to our complete surprise we made it up to the top in 20 minutes!
Sweat was pouring from every pore in my body and I'm rather rosy in the photos (as you'll see!) but I was absolutely determined to get to the top!! The hike included two sets of stairs (99 and then 76) and a 225 foot unlit tunnel, and I'm pleased to say the view was totally worth it. We came back down in 20 minutes too, the guy at the desk couldn't believe we'd done it so fast!! Big thank you to Matt who donated me his trainers for the hike, as he is buying a new pair soon! I did to be fair though give him something of mine; my pink/red/orange spotty PJ shorts which I'm sure he'll treasure!!
Tonight we're just chilling out, a couple I met at the Octopus Resort in Fiji are in my dorm (it really is a small world!) Vicki & I have been making plans for when we get to LA...talking of which we're leaving Hawaii earlier than planned, we fly to L.A tomorrow lunchtime - woo hoo!! And as it happens, LA Galaxy are playing Saturday Night, I can't tell you how excited I am at the prospect of seeing "David" play live!!
I almost cried this morning when I saw there was a home game on Saturday whilst I'm in LA! Keep your fingers and everything else crossed for me that I can get my hands on a ticket!!
Leaving Hawaii early means having more time in California so we can do San Francisco in addition to LA and then Vagas! As we have already seen the main highlights on the island of O'ahu and as Hawaii has not lived up to our expectations (I blame going to Fiji before hand) it makes sense to move on.
Well, that's all for now folks!
Take care, I will send an update from Hollywood!! How exciting!
Lots of love, Shell xxxx
PS. HAVE A NICE DAY!
PPS. My foot is no longer swollen!! Yay!
