Travelled from Delhi to Amritsar on our 2nd day! We had an early morning flight with cheap air company Air Deccan. We were supposed to fly out at 5.30am, it was delayed because of the fog at Amritsar. We then waited to around 10am to be told that the flight would be cancelled. Our problem was we had someone waiting on us at the airport to pick us up & we had to get there. Plus to be honest, we didn't fancy staying another night in Delhi. We were only staying in India for 1 week so we couldn't waste any of our days.
We eventually got there around 2pm, we had to pay for flights with another company called Jet airways which i would advice anyone to travel with. This company seems to have a good reputation in India & are alot more experienced. To be honest we didn't think our lift would still be there as we were 9 hrs late however very much to our suprise Mr Singh was still waiting on us which was fantastic!
We were going to stay with Indian family for 3 nights before heading to the Taj Mahal. We know the nephew of the family from back home & he had arranged for us to go and stay with his aunt & uncle while we were in India. If anyone gets the chance to do this it will be one of your most memorable & fantastic experiences. We loved it!
We headed for Punjab by car which was another 3 1/2 hour drive. We were so grateful that Mr Singh had waited for us however we felt terrable that he had himself been travelling since 2.30am. On route to Punjab again the roads were ridiculous. Possably 10 cars to 3 lanes nipping in & out of each space constantly tooting their horns at each other. We stopped at a service station for some food. To begin with it's a really strange feeling to be the only white people around and having everyone look and stare at you. This is something u are just not used to. Everyone is friendly enough however i was very much out of my comfort zone.
We drove along a busy market & cut up a lane which led to lots of houses. This was where we would stay for the next 3 nights. To be honest, we thought we were going to a house with 7 bedrooms, plasma & sky t.v with internet. We were so wrong. The house did have 7 bedrooms & was immaculte. They had a housekeeper & someone who seemed to drive them around ect.... but no plasma & certainly no internet. The family were lovely people who invited us into their home and looked after us. Mrs Singh cooked for us each night. She seemed to be delighted that we were there to stay. She did not speak much english & we don't speak punjab lol however we always seemed to be able to communicate.
Our first night we sat down in the living area, watching t.v & the grandfather who lives in Scotland was visiting so we were chatting to him as he speaks quite good english. The singhs friends were across the road at an Indian wedding so we had lots of visitors that night. Lots of Mrs Singhs friends had came across to say hello & to get a look at us. I don't think many of them again had ever seen a white person before.
We went to bed pretty early as we were all shattered from the long day's journey!
