Going to Sachsenhausen concentration camp today.
Started with an introduction to the history of the German nazi's and how the idea's of concentration camps developed.
It was a very strange experience, I wouldn't say I enjoyed myself but it was an eye opening experience which made me appreciate a lot more about how the victims would have felt at the time and how they were actually treated.
Very eery seeing the concentration camps but it was in a way quite admirable to see that Germany are displaying their history openly to commemorate what happened rather than hide it.
We started our your in camp street which was where prisoners were taken into the camp. Once they'd walked through the first gates into >>tower A>station z<< execution trench and the crematorium next to it. This is where they told people they would be coming for a health check and a doctor would take someone into the room to measure them up and as they went to atm on the height measuring tool a small cap window would open from the next room and a bullet would be put through the victims head. Gold, fake teeth, jewellery and anything valuable was taken from the dead and bodies cremated.
There was a lot of information to take in from this tour but the feeling of disgust was one I mainly remember throughout. Definite eye opener experience.
Went back to see the reichstag building which is where parliament is held. Then headed back to the hostel and out for dinner.
Getting a night train to Amsterdam today! Wish us luck... Our last Interail train
