I would have to say this was my favourite stop in Spain. We were lucky enough to arrive here on 31st August and have our Hostel actually on 31st August Street which has great significance to everyone living in San Sebastian. It was the only surviving street from the fire that wrecked through the city on yep you guessed it, the 31st August!
Everyone on the street had candles lit on their balconies and pretty much the whole town congregated in the street for a remembrance which was really cool. They also had a parade with traditional dancing and singing which added a great atmosphere to the city. And man did they party!! The whole weekend was an excuse to not stop eating and drinking and of course we joined in
The town has two beaches, we stayed at the "surf" beach mostly (wouldn't call the waves surfable however ha) and just relaxed in the sun. Climbed to the top of Mt Urgell to see the huge statue of Jesus as well as some great views and also had a lovely dinner at a restaurant right on the beach. The only weird thing about my time here was seeing vandalism to a church by a terrorist group who are against San Sebastian becoming part of Spain (at the moment they are under their own government). The group apparently never inflict harm on people but they still go to a lot of trouble to make their views known such as blowing up empty school busses in the past… weird??
