I met up w/ my friend Katie & her husband Steve in Santiago. We took the cable car up a nearby hill & it was a nice view.At the top we tried this drink that Katie had heard about called mote con huesillo - very sweet iced tea w/ peaches & barley. It was very good but very sweet. We took the funicular down & that was pretty cool. Then we went to one of Pablo Neruda's (famous Chilean poet & communist) 3 houses called la Chascona (meaning flaming hair) named after his 3rd wife, Matilde. The tour was really interesting telling about his fascination w/ the sea even though he was never a sailor. He made his house in the shape of a boat w/ water around it and then expanded it to build a part of the house representing a lighthouse. We also learned the story of how he died of sadness after the Pinochet political coup in Chile & the torture and death of his good friend, a fellow communist. It was so sad! After the Neruda house/museum we went to the Precolumbian art museum because Katie really wanted to see it and then we saw a little bit of the downtown area.
The next day we took a trek up to a mountain called el Morado. Our guide was Spanish, Alberto, & he was great! It was a long drive there but it went by quickly and the views were great along the way.We saw the San Jose volcano and took a ton of pictures of the colorful mountains all around us during the trek.We stopped at Panimavidas where the water was bubbling because of the mixture of minerals in it.We then stopped at a very pretty lagoon before climbing up to the San Francisco glacier. It was exciting because it was Katie & Steve's first glacier. It was also cool because we got to go inside underneath a part of the glacier that had melted out.So we were in a little glacier cave & it was really beautiful.
