Started out early with a stop at our neighborhood Starbucks then the Tube to St. Paul's Cathedral (4th largest in the world), site of Charles/Diana wedding of 1981. No pics allowed inside here but one of my favorite sites so far. Climbed the 520 steps to the dome for an awesome view of the city. Great audio tour here.
We then walked in the rain for a bit and decided to do the Churchill War Rooms that are next door to #10 Downing St. (residence of Prime Minister). Walked the Whitehall street of foreign ministry buildings and famous statues and very ritzy buildings. Ate lunch at an Italian place called Frankie's at Trafalgar Square. Walked to Houses of Parliament but they were not allowing visitors today. We then walked across the Westminster Bridge to Thames River for a river cruise. Cruise was cold, windy, and cold! We got off the cruise at Tower Bridge and took a Tube north to the Royal Mews where we saw the royal carriages, limos, and 2 lonely horses. We then took another Tube to the famous Abbey Road NW8 where the Beatles were photographed for an album cover and the Abbey Road Recording Studios. Whew! Lots of walking. Then took the Tube to Victoria Station where we grabbed a bite to eat before the play. We bought discount tickets on Saturday to see the 7:30 performance of Wicked tonight. This is a really popular West End play about the story of the Witches of Oz. The theatre (Victoria) was beautiful. Play was outstanding. Our seats were up high but still good. We got out quick and went right across the street to our Tube stop. We made it back to the apartment in just 30 minutes. The Tube was almost deserted...weird! It's 11:15 and it has been a long but fun day!
