(Sorry about the picture, which is romantic but wholly inaccurate... this website is inexplicably lacking in pictures of Germany and as usual I can't get my own pictures off of my camera).
Ah, Berlin. We came by to see what the fuss was about, and left pleased, but underwhelmed. At the DDR museum, we dipped into Germany's recent history and learned about daily life under the Soviet regime... right down to a recreated 70's living room. The entire place was hands-on, which I think is a really cool idea. Later we saw the outdoor gallery along the river... in fact, a section of the old Wall many blocks long, now covered with freedom-related graffiti by dozens of artists. As for Berlin's legendary nightlife, we found a "living room bar" with couches in it, and I guess there were a couple of other people there. Overall, I enjoyed the low prices, the wide selection of international food, and the opportunity to put my college German classes to use (although I fared much worse than I did with French, for reasons I haven't been able to discern).
I also enjoyed our hostel, which was refreshingly small, and had a comfortable common area, a good kitchen and even a large DVD library. Come to think of it, it was such a contrast with our place in Amsterdam, maybe that's why most of my Berlin memories are of relaxing and being comfortable rather than seeing all the tourist sights. And you know... that's not such a bad thing at all.
