Heading to the tippity top of the south island, past the Abel Tasman National Park, along Golden Bay to Wharariki Beach. Mike rushing me so we could see the sun set. Up the trail through green pastures, past cows and grazing sheep - wondering why we were on their trail. About fifteen minutes later we are enveloped by sand dunes and the setting sun on a private beach. Sandstone arches, crashing waves and birds heading home to roost. Another magical moment. The holiday park was like being on a farm - horses, peacocks, ducks, pigs....we made tacos for dinner. Yum.
The next couple of days was all about hiking in the park. Pillar point a WWII secret radio station between the north and south islands. Farewell spit a sand spit that's had it share of ship wrecks and whale beaching - it was incredibly windy so we didn't last long. The Abel is an excellent tramping park with hidden beaches and camp sites throughout. Much of the park is a designated marine reserve.
