Our drive after Queenstown took us across Haast Pass and the northern part of Mt. Aspiring National Park, a moss covered, misty and windy road. Green, green and more green. Reaching all the way to the sea. The landscape is loaded with rainforest trees and ferns, lakes and mountain peeks. Reaching the West Coast is our start north along the uber scenic Southern Alps. Almost 80% of the West Coast land area is protected under the Department of Conservation.
Our goal is to hook up with Fox Glacier Guiding and go on day hike adventure on the glacier tomorrow.
The sun sets pretty early, usually by 5:30. This means that by 6pm it is dark. Really dark. Not a lot of street lights or people's homes or other cars, except in the village or town.
Arriving into Fox was a dark, foggy, twisted road. Somewhere above us is the glacier. We'll have to wait 'til tomorrow to see it. The weather is due to be on our side.
Waking in the middle of the night rewards us with a clear sky, moon shining and the southern stars. Beauty.
