Geothermal activity. This region is the heart of the North Island and is the location of volcanoes and geothermal fields - bubbling mud pots, stinking sulphur streams, erupting geysers, steaming vents. Also, a wide range of tourist activities like experiencing the Maori culture, skydiving, jet boating, rafting, kayaking, horse riding, tramping, four wheeling, wildlife parks, Redwood forest and spa baths. The list is endless. We partook in the Taupo Bungy - NZ's highest water touch (Mike dunked, I missed it by a millimeter) a short tramp to Kerosene creek and dip in the thermal creek (recommended to us by a couple we met on a delicious wine tour in the Napier region) geothermal exploration at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and a mud bath and sulphur pool soak at Hell's Gate-nature's health spa.
