We left the saddened shambles of Christchurch and drove east to Delightful Akoroa! A sleepy little French seaside town reached after a long and winding road with the steep hillsides speckled with thousands of white dots (sheep), around the bend and down the hill as if appearing out of the ocean mist - Akoroa. Charming. Barry's Bay Cheeses, fresh fish & chips, and a chance to swim with the Hector's dolphins. The smallest and NZ's own. With a 5 mil wetsuit and a bit of luck the ocean swells are no match for spotting the tiny dolphins. We jumped into the super chilling waters and hoped the Hector's would pay us a visit. The third swim rewarded us with a handful of the little social swimmers. That was something, bobbing around in the icy waters, us blowing and singing into snorkles to help draw attention, and then the dolphins appearing. All of this fun was topped off by hot cocoa on the return to port.
