We have found it very difficult find reliable wifi (and we've just been enjoying the vacation away from our phones), but for ourselves and you all (our loved ones), we wanted to catch you up on everything we've been doing up til now.
We spent three days in Berlin and were so impressed with the history we learned while we were there. We toured the Berlin Wall, went to the top of their main government building at night (the Reichstag), which was very cool and explored the whole city by foot (At least 7 miles a day). We saw amazing old buildings, went inside churches that are 100's of years old, strolled through the Tiergarten and took a walking tour that Trip Advisor recommended which was fun. One of the days we took the Sachsenhausen Memorial Tour (concentration camp), and were blown away by it. One can't say they enjoyed the tour, but it was something we wanted to experience and it was great learning about the history of this camp. We stayed in the city center, ate authentic German food (which is fabulous) and enjoyed all the sights of the city.
From there we took a quick flight to Frankfurt where we stayed for 24 hours. We walked about 5 miles down their main river and through the city center, which is where we were staying. We found a quaint square with lots of small restaurants with outdoor seating, and chose a wonderful one. During dinner, a man from the street started playing the flute and I have never been more impressed with somebody playing this instrument. Frankfurt seemed to be the NYC of Germany, and although we were there for such a short time, it was enough to see all we wanted.
The next morning (yesterday), we hopped on a bus tour called the Romantic Road which took the off-beaten path to Munich. We drove on the autobahn for about 45 minutes and I LOVED watching the nice cars zooming by! We saw about 20 crazy-old towns and the most AMAZING scenery in between. This tour stopped for about 40 minutes in 3 of the main towns and we had perfect weather for walking around. One of the stops included a tour of an old castle, which was fun to pretend to be royalty for a little bit. We saw about 5 castles in all, and each one of them was so extraordinary. All the towns had cobblestone streets, amazingly old churches and great shops to stop in for a peak. We had a great time on this road (and yes, it was very romantic indeed, haha), but by 6:30pm we had made it to our destination.
We are currently in Munich! Oktoberfest started at noon today and we were told they are expecting 6.5 million visitors to the city because of it. We are staying in the nicest place yet with a young couple, and we spent last night drinking a liter of Oktoberfest beer out of an official (huge) mug with the guy. We learned a ton about the city and really enjoyed the conversation with a local. We have 6 friends who have come from San Diego to attend the festival too and we will be meeting up with them shortly. We are approximately 2 and a half miles away from the grounds, but we have found Europe transportation to be wonderful and will be taking that.
So all in all, Germany is the most beautiful place yet and we are loving each and every second of this trip!! We're so grateful and thankful to be experiencing all the wonderful things Europe has to offer.
