Early start to the day, at Nice station at 7am for a train (45 mins) to Ventimiglia. A short wait, then on next train (4 hours) to Milano Centrale. A long ride but we had our own private cabin with sliding door and curtains on both sides. Very quaint. Milano Centrale was chaos. People everywhere but no ATM in sight. Eventually found just one on the lower floor. Old, rumbly train (1 hr) to Varenna. Short walk to the ferry dock for our last (20 min) journey to Bellagio. Phew! What a sight! All around the lake and villages. Gorgeous! We all had big smiles on our faces. As the ferry got closer we could actually see our hotel in front of us. Mario was happy not to be dragging the bags too far. The hotel is fabulous. A grand old lady with beautiful stairs, large elegant hallways, etc. Our room is very large and overlooks the lake!! Magnificent! Rested up and then went for a walk through the little, cobbled lanes of the town. Lots of little shops, fountains here and there and a church. Great little ice-cream shops and a couple of delicatessens. Bought ice-cream and some cheese to try. Delicious! Dinner overlooking the lake. The girls saw a waiter feeding old bread rolls to the ducks and joined in. He was very nice and let them feed the rest of his load. Forgot about Italy's "cover charge" per diner. Also how your main never comes with veggies/salad/potatoes etc. Also forgot that they regard pasta as a first course. So we got asked after our pasta meal if we would now like to order our mains! No, we didn't, we were full! Serenaded to sleep ("Volaire") by the musician playing outside our hotel room. Luckily, all of us (bar Mario) were exhausted so we didn't get the full repertoire!
