Breakfast on my hotel terrace overlooking the city, amazing view. The TV was on in the hotel, and saw the 1st of May celebrations in Plaza de la Revoluzion, wow, what a parade. It was a huge day, as it was the 50th anniversary of the revolution. Had arranged to meet Jose at 10, but somehow managed to get lost. The streets were empty, but managed to hail a cocotaxi (a moped with a shell), had a death defying journey through the streets, and managed to find him. We moved my stuff to the casa particular (kind of like a bed and breakfast) where I was staying for the next 3 nights, which was about a 10 min walk from the hotel.
I dumped my bags, and we took a lada taxi to where the parade was. Sadly, it was over, even though I'd seen it on the tv about half an hour before. They were clearing up, and everything was almost dismantled, and they were cleaning down the streets. I guess communism is good for some things, efficiency being one of them (not sure I can think of any others).
We spent the day walking all over the city, eating cheap and dodgy street food, taking photos of old cars, and soaking up the atmosphere. I went back to my casa for a rest, walking in the heat is tiring, and then out for dinner. Food here sucks, I'm missing my rice and beans! It started to piss down, so I went back to my casa. 4 new girls arrived, Kori from Canada, and Carmel, Emma, and Rhiannon from England. So we all went out for a drink in one of Havana's most famous bars, the Floridita, where Ernest Hemmingway drank. It was just round the corner from our casa, and we went for a wee walk on the way back, but it was pretty dodgy. People were constantly hassling us and trying to grab us. Not cool.
