Henry and Martha gave me a lift to the airport, it was really sad to say goodbye to them, and to leave beautiful Costa Rica. But it was time for ther next stage of my adventure.....
San Jose airport was full of people wearing marks to protect them from swine flu, but nowhere was selling them, so I took my chances!
Had a long wait as the flight was delayed for no apparent reason. Got to talk to some nice people, including an American girl who'd been in Edinburgh the summer before. We were talking about highland cows, and I told her the story about the Haggis guide who got infected by Hamish. Turns out she'd heard the same story, as she'd been talking to another Haggis guide in a hostel who had told it to her. Weird.
Sat beside a Spanish guy called Jose on the flight, and we decided to split a taxi into Havana when we landed (smart move, sticking with somone who speaks the language, I figured we were less likely to get ripped off). We were late landing, and immigration was a total nightmare, the strictest I've ever been through. Jose's passport was kept by the immigration guys, and after we'd got our bags, they wanted to ask him more questions, and then they swabbed him for drugs and explosives. I was starting to question my judgement about sharing a taxi with him, but luckily he didn't test positive. Finally got a taxi, which we shared with a Cuban family. Didn't see much of the city, as it was dark. Got to the hotel at about 2.30. It was pretty scabby, but fine for just one night.
