Up early and we started our windy journey up the mountains to Dalsnibba which is a mountain at the end of the Geiranger Valley about 21km south of the village of Geiranger. The 2 square kilometer lake Djupvatnet lies directly to the southeast of the mountain. The viewing area here is spectacular with snow capped mountains and all the way down Geirangerfjord. From here we headed to Lom.
Lom is famous for its extensive history, for having one of the few remaining stave churches in Norway, and for lying in the midst of the highest mountains in Northern Europe. The church is a triple nave stave church that uses free standing inner columns to support a raised section in the ceiling of the main nave. This type of church is amongst the oldest Stave Churches.
The church dates to approximately second part of 12th century. This stave church is actually one of just a very few stave churches of which the original medieval crest with a dragon head still survives. We were fortunate enough to see a party gathering, all in traditional costumes.
The river Bovra runs through the centre of this town and there is a zipline over the rapids which finish near the cafe area. There was a wonderful bakehouse here, the queue was very long. The toilet block was made out of small wooden logs.
After we had our morning tea we continued our journey to Lilliehammer and stopped at the famous winter sport resort which hosted the 1994 winter olympics.
We had our tour group photo taken at the base of the ski jump before taking the chair lift to the top. There were great panoramic views of the ski area, Lake Mjosa and Lilliehammer. As we came down the chairlift we could see the Olympic Flame Tower. We climbed up the tower and pretended to light the flame in a number of different ways. Lots of fun. We continued to our hotel in Lilliehammer, the Clarion which was in the same streeet as an Irish Bar - the Paddy Bar. We met up with a few from our group and had a few ales then strolled around the local city streets Lilliehammer.
