Saz and Dave's travels
Today we were woken up quite early by the girls in our dorm room, clattering and chattering about but it was difficult to determine the precise time as there were no windows in the room making us think it was the middle of the night when it was probably 8am or something. We got showers and then went for our free breakfast of toast and jam, washing the plates ourselves afterwards. There was quite an odd mix of people at the hostel, some young, some old. One American woman Joelle, about 55 years old, got chatting to us at breakfast. She was interesting if a little odd and was on her way to Europe on a mission to promote peace!
After breakfast we made use of the free internet at the hostel while Zac went to buy a digital camera he had seen on the cheap. Looking at the guide book there are quite a few things that we want to do in Singapore but we will probably wait until next time we are here - before we fly to Australia. For example the night safari at Sinapore Zoo is definately one we will do next time we are here. This is because we only actually have a day here now - tomorrow we fly to Phuket and also because it is a Sunday quite a few of the attractions are closed.
Today we decided just to have a look around the shops on the main shopping street - Orchard road. On the map it didn't look far at all but when we got walking it was MILES!!! It was so hot and humid today which didnt help and about 3/4s of the way to Orchard road, I started to feel very dizzy and faint with a splitting headache. Deciding it was probably not the best thing to carry on walking around in the heat we decided to stop for a drink and a bite to eat in an air conditioned American style diner complete with Grease songs blaring out of the stereo!!! Dave got an americano coffee and we shared a chocolate brownie and ice-cream - sheer indulgence but wonderful. We stayed in the diner for quite a while, soaking up the air conditioning before heading back to the hostel where we met up with Zac.
After some more time on the internet my headache finally went away and we went off for a look around Raffles shopping mall which had loads of nice jewelry and clothes - definately somewhere to come back to when we have money! For tea we went to the food section of the shopping mall and got Roti Prata with sausage and cheese which are sort of pancake things folded up made from a dough which the chef stretches round to make bigger and thinner very skillfully. The Prata came with a bowl full of curry sauce - Dave got a spicy one and I got a chickpea one, a bit like Dahl. All very yummy!!!
After tea we went for a shower and then sat around the hostel chatting to some more people until 10:30pm when we went to get the MRT (Singapore underground) to the airport. Zac walked us to the station playing Breaking into Heaven (Stone Roses - Second Coming says Dave) then we said good-bye which was very sad. Our flight to Phuket wasn't until 7am the next day but we thought we would stay over at the airport to save money. This wasn't the best idea we have ever had as because we weren't checking in until 5am we were stuck with the rows of quite hard seats in the waiting area. Our flight was leaving from the new budget terminal of the airport that opened yesterday which was really smart and almost completely empty apart from one frog that Dave took outside in a plastic bag which he had to throw away as the frog had weed in it during transit. We managed to sleep a bit in the airport but it was very hard and we had to put on fleeces and sleeping bags as it was so cold - stupid air-con (It was so cold that when i went outside to warm up, my glasses steamed up!). Also throughout the night the attendants decided to play some rediculously irritating music involving steel drums again and again and again, so this didn't help us trying to get to sleep. We voiced our concerns in a tired and grumpy feedback form the following morning.
