Saz and Dave's travels
We got the 9:20am bus this morning to Townsville, the last place we will be stopping on the East Coast before we make our way inland to Alice Springs and Ayres Rock. The journey took about 4 hours which was really short compared to the major slogs we have made between places so far!
We got into Townsville at about 1:30pm where the bus dropped us of at the ferry terminal. Not wanting to walk the 25 minutes into town with our bags we hopped on a bus that thankfully dropped us right outside a hostel. The hostel wasn't in our guidebook and seemed a bit dubious with its motel appearance and some seedy looking characters but we got a really cheap double room with its own fridge that was clean which was good enough for us!
After dumping our bags in the room we went off to explore Townsville. Townsville is a very strange place we quickly discovered. To start with it was incredibly quiet. This may have had something to do with it being a Sunday but it still seemed strangely uninhabited. As we walked from our hostel to the centre of town we passed a few really nice cafe bars and restaurants interspersed with wasteland. It all seemed really disjointed and the place didn't really have any true centre.
Once in town, we got the cheapest meal we could find - Subway! and then went off to do some food shopping. After this, feeling slightly at a loose end (we always have to be doing something!) we decided to treat ourselves and go out to the cinema - the first time we have been since leaving the UK. We watched match point (with Scarlett Johannson) which was quite good if a little strange!
Later we went back to the hostel and cooked ourselves some pasta in the communal kitchen along side a few of the longer-term residents who are mainly builders or single older men who stayed here one night and never left!
