Saz and Dave's travels
We were awoken this morning by the sun shining on the ten and turning it into an oven. Everyone felt pretty bad this morning after last nights drinking, however as this was our last day on Fraser Island, we decided to make an early start to get to Lake Wabby (as you can see in the picture). So after breakfast everybody got packed and we headed down the beach toward the lake with Mark at the wheel.
Unfortunately over the course of the previous night it appeared that someone had come into our 4x4 and stolen some valuables as half an hour into the drive, Fiona realised that her digital camera and some money was missing from her bag. Feeling pretty shocked, this prompted everyone to check their own belongings and we even emptied the entire van to try to find Fiona's stuff, but to no avail. Understandably, Fiona was pretty gutted about this and it was made even worse by the fact that she had had her I Pod stolen from the hostel the day before the trip.
Having spent a good half hour parked at the roadside, we decided that we would have to make a move and try to sort out the robbery later as we were cutting it fine to get to the lake in time to enjoy it, have lunch and get to the ferry. We spent another hour driving before we got to the car park for the lake and before we could see it, there was a half hour bush walk in front of us.
After having lunch (as you arn't allowed to take food to the lake), cleaning all the pots from last night and walking through the surrounding bush we eventually got to Lake Wabby.
This lake is amazing, there is a bit of a walk over the white sand dunes which brings you to the clear green water. It was a right laugh running down the dunes straight into the refreshing water, it was great. We even got to see a turtle and some big fish swimming in it.
Due to our earlier delay, we didn't have too long too long to enjoy the lake, so after a quick swim and a chance to get dry, we all made our way back to the truck in good time to get back to the ferry port.
I drove the last leg of the tour back through the inland tracks and to the service station where we re-inflated the tyres and hooked the 4x4 back into 2 wheel drive. Everyone had aniticipated that the drive would take a little longer than it did and we actually got back to the port early enough to enjoy an ice cream and a coke. Well rather early than late whcih some of our friends will be surprised to hear me say.
Everyone was fairly quiet on the ferry back to Hervey Bay and we all felt really sorry for Fiona. The journey lasted 50 minutes and after that, we were back on boring sealed roads and I was already missing the off road tracks. We quickly popped into the camp supply store to drop off all the gear and get the car checked over and then finished the journey by cruising through town to the hostel. It was very emotional saying goodbye to the Land Cruiser, but at least we got it back in one piece which meant we got our $50 bond back.
That night after showers and a quick brew, everyone signed up for the hostel pizza night ($10 all you can eat pizza, soft drink and a film). It was luxury having all that junk food and just being able to chill, but by 9pm while everyone was watching TV, we all seemed to be dropping off, so me and Saz decided to turn in. Feeling thoroughly knackered from the amazing trip, we just had time to brush out teeth before we fell asleep in our double room (again, so much for the budget travellers).
After 2 nights of sleeping on the hard Fraser Island ground, the soft warm double bed was so cosy that I had one of the best nights sleeps since leaving the UK.
