Belize: Belize City, Caye Caulker, Orange Walk and Lamanai
We stopped off for one night in Belize City, along with a French friend that we met in Tikal, thinking that we´d catch up on laundry, internet etc and see the sights. Well, there wasn´t much to see, but we did find out that the Belizean´s have a whole different concept of punctuality when we waited for almost an hour for the laundry to open in the morning, and then discovered the owner hadn´t bothered to dry our clothes after all and they were soaking wet...!
When we arrived on Caye Caulker, the boat dock had a´go slow´ slogan, which says it all about their way of life! It was really windy on the island, but the breeze was very welcome after all the hot and humid weather we´ve had and we spent a couple of days just sunbathing, chilling out and reading. We decided not to do any snorkelling or diving, as the famous Blue Hole dive was really expensive and we´ve been told it´s just as good but much cheaper in Mexico.
The winds brought our first rain for almost three weeks, which hit just as we arrived at Orange Walk. Our host there, Raoul, was so impressed with Sascha´s table tennis skills that he wanted to take him to meet various locals!
Luckily it was less wet on Sunday, when we took a boat trip from our riverside lodge along the jungle-lined New River to the ruins at Lamanai. It turned out to be the highlight of the trip so far, not so much for the ruins (which were less impressive than Tikal) but because we got to stroke and hand-feed bananas to two very cute spider monkeys! On the downside, the jungle was full of mosquitos and Nicola is now sporting dozens more bites from head to foot (she also took a tumble when climbing back down the High Temple, the third highest Mayan temple in Central America).
The weeks are whizzing by now, and incredibly we´ve now been travelling for a month. Next stop is Mexico, where we´ll spend just over a fortnight.
