Nicaragua: Isla de Ometepe, Granada, Leon
The journey to Nicaragua was eventful, as we left a bag in a taxi in our rush to get the ferry to Ometepe. But the locals sprang into action to help us, and one local radio announcement later, we had the bag back with passports, camera etc all in tact! It meant we arrived at our cabana in pitch darkness and heavy rain, and to say it was off the beaten track would be an understatement, so we got there only by the light on our mobile phones!
However our cabana was the perfect eco retreat (complete with compostable toilet!) and we enjoyed a hike up one of the volcanoes which had an amazing view. Our Spanish guide, Fausto, pointed out monkeys, birds and enormous butterflies and taught us some Spanish too!
Back on the mainland we have been in Granada and Leon, both beautiful colonial cities, although Leon feels more like the ´real´Nicaragua and less set-up for tourists. We took local buses rather than tours to get to Lake Apoyo and the beach at Las Penitas. We were the only non-locals on the bus and had both the lake and the beach more or less to ourselves. The weather is glorious although some days there are still heavy afternoon showers.
We´ve decided to avoid travelling through Honduras because of the political problems, so we have changed our route for the next few days. Tomorrow we will take a Tica bus all the way to Guatemala City (via a corner of Honduras and El Salvador), with an overnight stopover in San Salvador.
PS Happy birthday for tomorrow, Rainer (we tried to call from the hostel today, but got the answerphone).
