Today, for me at least, was traumatic and left me feeling very sore and very foolish! Oh well, it will provide you with much amusement so here we go....
Guess who fainted in theatre............. TWICE!!!!!! Soooooooooooooo embarassing. It was really cool as well. Orthopaedics and I was scrubbed up and operating (scalpal and everything!) on a finger. It was hot, I was sweaty but I was sat down (yep thats correct - on my bum on a stool). Started to get the whole funny lights in front of eyes and woozy feeling so sensibly removed myself from the situation to a stool in the corner. Felt fine again after a couple of deep breaths and head between knees so go back. I am the only assistant (very short staffed!). But I had only managed to do 2 stiches (having lasted the entire op!!!) before that dreaded feeling returned. Got myself up and started to walk away but the next thing I know I am lying face down on a blue concrete floor with very sore knees and a throbbing left eye socket. Lots of big mama style nurses flapping about yelping -she's collapsed, she's collapsed! Once I regained some level of consciousness I tried to reassure them all I was "fine" . They sat me on a stool and then.......... boom somehow I am once again eating concrete!! Next thing I know I am in recovery in my scrubs alongside patients with an oxygen mask, sats monitor and BP cuff on with a reading of 50/37! Thought they were gonna start running IV fluids through but quickly convinced them my BP is quite low anyway. Very nauseus but at least I avoided vomitting. Lots of crude jokes about feeding me rum, and the fact I must be lacking oxygen "up there"! I have been left with very red cheeks and extremely bruised knees.
Rest of day was spent feeling a tad weak. I still managed to go along to an Obs and Gynae lecture with Cate, which was actually really good and given by an english female consultant who now lives out here. Made a refreshing change being able to understand everything that was said without concentrating too hard.
Willson had a morning with the anaesthetist and an afternoon in bed. Cate, Andy and I ventured into Port of Spain for a bit of look round, a spot of shopping and a very yummy iced coffee!
