Sarah's Travels
We are now back in Poland, but this time in Krakow. Prague was fantastic - it was packed with tourists like us but that didn't spoil it and we managed to see the Castle, Charles Bridge and many of the bars around the old town square! We also managed to visit the Pilsner Urquell brewery in a nearby town and also watched the UEFA and FA Cup finals along with many other English fans in the city!
We took a night train from Prague to Krakow, which left at 9.30pm and arrived 2 hours late in Krakow at 8am. We shared our compartment with 2 Finnish women (aged around 60!). At 3am we were rudely awakened at the Polish border by extremely scary-looking Polish border guards in uniforms banging on all the compartment doors demanding to see our passports! It was quite scary but all part of the experience!
Didn't sleep too well on the train, as expected, and felt very rough when we got into Krakow. We're now staying in the Sky Hostel and have been around the city and seen an annual procession of about 1500 bishops/cardinals/nuns/monks, etc at the Castle, which was a nice atmosphere.
Today we have been to Auschwitz on the bus, which is 1.5hrs from Krakow. We had a 3.5hour guided tour around the 2 sites of the concentration camp. It is very moving seeing the displays of the POW's belongings which were taken from them, and it was a shocking insight into the suffering that went on.
Tomorrow we will be visiting the Salt Mines and then on Wednesday we are heading to Zakopane in the mountains on the Polish/Slovak border, which I can't wait to see from everything I have heard!
