So I don't think I've mentioned this before, but everything here is on Fiji time- so, late basically. If you ask when something will happen, they shrug and tell you 'Fiji time'. With one day left on Qamea island, which we only had as we extended our stay, we still had not managed to get them to go from Fiji time to really gonna happen with any of the activities we'd paid for... We were getting pretty frustrated with fiji time and had bugged them about taking us to a village a lot- we finally got to go on our last afternoon- it was really interesting and not just set up as a tourist thing so we met the families of some of the hostel staff which was nice! They are mostly very poor and live in corrugated iron huts, but in such a beautiful setting with a beach on one side and a rain Forrest on the other- stunning!
That night we had an early night and were just brushing teeth etc with the hut door open (the shower, sink and loo were basically outside) when a moth the size of a pigeon flew in, making Nicole scream and the 3 of us run for cover in the corner. The more it flew around, the more Nicole screamed to get it out and we tried to think of ways to get it out so she could sleep... It turns out turning off the light didn't work so well as it got confused and flew around erratically with us unable to see where it was. By this point me and Laura had got the giggles and were bent double laughing so hard! Nicole took cover under her mosquito net which she'd ripped down from the ceiling, only to find that because it was a bright green net, it attracted the mutant moth and it landed on her- I was crying and struggling to breath but eventually managed to get it out by trapping the net outside and sliding it back in through a barely open doorway. One word- hilarious.
So the next battle was getting the Fijian staff to take our need to get back to Taveuni island seriously- it went from oh maybe tomorrow- to oh you have to go tomorrow? To -um maybe it will work but we have to wait for someone to bring fuel for the boat, to- ok 9am- oh maybe after lunch- oh um when the tide is right - to, we've just heard that the other people ate leaving on the ferry and it's going very early so we have to leave now! I was pretty amazed to find that one of the staff had arranged for another boat to meet us in the middle of the ocean to take some of the passengers- not sure how but it actually worked!
Since we've been at Tuvununu - a day and a half- we've spent a few hours snorkelling around honeymoon island in flippers about 5 sizes too big- lots of big blue starfish and pretty fish- and nearly drowned as the wind made big waves which got into our snorkels and made it near impossible to swim back to the beach! We made it eventually though, with very tired legs and more than the recommended daily dose of salt!
Today we opted fir what we thought would be a nice easy day walking to some waterfalls in the jungle. Well Boone told me that 2 of the 3 were at the top of a very very high mountain and that the only way up was along a 30cm wide path made of mostly wet clay and a bit of coral, with a huge drop to one side and nothing to hold on to. Those of you who know me well will know this is not my idea if a good time. Saying that though, the scenery was incredible and swimming in the waterfall pools was so nice after our 2 hour up hill trek (I smelt like a badgers armpit). Despite having legs like jelly- something the guide found hilarious- and being certain that at least one of us would slip and plummet to their death, I almost enjoyed the walk and... Wait for it... DID NOT DIE! Massive achievement! I think it's fair to say they did not do a risk assessment fir the first sunny day after a week of rain, but hey, it's Fiji!
I must go pack for tomorrow's flight, but slightly concerned about opening the bathroom door again to retrieve towels after trapping a monster rat in there earlier... I'll update you on that later...
Only 2 days left of Fiji. A bit sad, but leaving one holiday destination for another does tent to soften the blow a little!
Feel free to leave messages- I will trade them for photos!
