Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hey,
We have left Bangkok now and are in Kanchanaburi which is where the Bridge over the river Kwai is.
On our last morning in Bangkok we had planned to go to the temples and the Grand Palace as it was rained off last time we attempted it . Unfortunately due to the ridiculously strong Thai Beers that we had consumed the night before we couldn't quite move and so we went to MacDonalds instead - an equally fitting cultural experience! We are going to be back in Bangkok a few times so i'm sure we will fit it in eventually!
When we finally got going in the afternoon we got our bus to Kanchanaburi which was not an experience I enjoyed! The only people in the minibus were me and Caroline and 3 Thai males who all worked for the bus company. One was driving fair enough but we weren't sure why the other 2 needed to be there to escort us too! So I wasn't feeling the most comfortable and I had a hangover to boot and then the man in front of me decided to start feeling my ankle! Well I almost died and was convinced we would be killed but we are still here to tell the tale and the other two men turned out to be nice so I think the leg feeling man was not quite the ticket!
We had booked a hostel with a pool and aircon but somehow we let the nice bus driver convince us to change to another guest house which has neither aircon or pool! Aparently the other one was run just for Israelis and we wouldn't have been welcome!
We booked our trip to go to the Erawan waterfalls and hell fire pass which should have been today. However when we were sitting in a bar watching the England match the women we had booked it through told us it wouldn;t be going today as they didn't have enough people to go - fingers crossed we are going tomorrow!
So today instead of swimming in beautiful waterfalls we went to the Death Railway museum. It was all about the railway that alllied POWs built in WW2 between Thailand and Burma including building the bridge over the River Kwai. The museum was excellent and really informative but soooooooooooo sad. Hundreds of thousands of POWs died making the railway which was only operational for about 2 years. At this point we were feeling pretty sad and so we headed off to the cemetery to make ourselves feel worse! It was an absolutely amazingly kept cemetery but there were just hundreds of rows of graves for the POWs that died making the railway. Reading the plaques was so sad - I was definitely glad i had my sunglasses on to hide my eyes!
After this experience we were not only depressed but also boiling as it was ridiculously hot. We headed off to another museum but were a bit museumed out at this point and this one didn't have aircon either!
So we went to the Bridge and then came back to sweat in our un airconditioned room!
Anyway I have finally managed to get the rest of my Oz photos on the site - including my Perth Photos which I know you are dying to see Mum!
