Leaving Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road was unbelievable...so unbelievable I just tried to write about it and I cant really explain it without it being boring but it really was amazing. Gorgeous views and photo stops every 10m...it really is such a lovely place.
Picking up our car after our morning on ramsay street, we started off up to torquay which is where the great ocean road begins. We made our first real stop on bells beach which is a big beach for surfing competitions, took some time to walk along the beach, paddle and skim stones, back into the car for another million photo stops, past the lighthouse from round the twist and arriving at apollo bay to stay the night.
The next day we took a detour off the great ocean road and drove through a rainforest where we saw our first wild koalas!! we saw 2 right by the road and got out to take photos and then as we drove back out we saw about a million more! That afternoon we reached the twelve apostles which for limestone stacks looked amazing! we stayed here for ages taking the same photo 17 times and then moved on to the bay of martyrs and the bay of islands which were pretty nice but I think would have looked more impressive from the sky (budget didnt really allow!!) and london bridge which was a double arched rock that juts out from the land until 1990 when one of the arches fell.
Made our next stopover in port fairy and the next day was filled with driving round the edges of the cliff and into kingston, home of larry the giant lobster which was made to the wrong scale and so is now the most massive and randomly placed sculpture ever! (Well except for all the other giant objects dotted around Australia!)
Finished the ocean road in 4 days and 3...individual hostels. The first and second hostels in apollo bay and port fairy were decent enough one was a little like an old peoples home but that's totally forgiven when compared to the final one we stayed in just outside of adelaide. We arrived just as there was a rally car race around the city so all the hostels were full so we stayed in a weird shed type of thing with the only other resident looking like some scary photofit criminal who stayed up all night playing war games on the playstation. Needless to stay we were all happy to get out of there, especially after I had to fight off a huntsman on our way in from the 3 film/week cinema the evening before.
We got to henley beach where we were staying with my friend from school who was repaying a favour after she had stayed with us back in bondi earlier in the year. It's such a nice place, not a lot to do but where there is a beach I'm happy and where there is a n64 and a million films to choose from, the boys are happy. Was so nice to be in a house for once and not in a hostel. I think it made us all realise that we couldn't wait to stop and settle down again in cairns.
Between sunbathing, film watching and attempting to work the n64, we also went into adelaide to a fringe festival to see some bands (presets and sneaky sound system etc), had some bubble blowing competitions, visitted a few markets and went to the museum. Nice city, not a great deal to do but I still loved being there.
Then it was down to glenelg to catch a bus at 6am to take us up to alice springs on one of the most surreal journeys yet!
