Hello from the galapagos! I finally made it!
So, this is my new life! It turns out that the descriptions of the project were woefully out, but it´s great here! The station is like one big guide camp type style thing and its quite big, we have 2 houses to live in with i think 11 rooms each, with 2 - 8 beds in each (home made bunk beds!) and there is also a kitchen area and each house has a wash building with 2 toilets and 2 (very cold) showers! Everything is made out of natural materials - so it´s a bit different to what i´m used to! it´s funny how quickly you get used to the fact that there are gaps in the bamboo wall of the toilets and showers, and that there´s no proper windows - just a net! the station is in the middle of nowhere though so there´s only us - if anyone else came they would be noticed in a second!
the work is generally monday to thursday, 8-10, 10.30-12 and 2-4 so its not too bad! this week i´ve helped build a path (sounds more exciting than it actually is, this involved carrying a lot of logs uup a very slippy hill!) i´ve hacked at "mora" with a machete (i know - sounds like a bad idea but they do teach us how to use them! mora is the blackberry plant and here its public enemy number 1! it´s killing everything else! who´d have known?!) i´ve collected oranges (well, actually just watched as someone who was good at climbing trees climbed the trees and someone who was good at catching caught the oranges!) and weeded the vegetable plots.
On fridays there is a non-compulsory walk in the morning, yesterday we went to a waterfall and some people got in - but i was way too lame to walk back soaking wet! at the weekends it is possible to stay at the station but it turns out that no one does, everyone goes to the town on the island which is on the sea front. it has beautiful beaches and there are sea lions everywhere! if you saw a picture you´d think they looked so peaceful - in the evening they all lie on the beach snuggled up together - they´re sooo cute! However - it turns out they have the most anti-social habits ever - they´re the "father jack" of the animal world - they all make these bizzarre belching come wretching noises, and another one which is like a sneeze and they stink!!! i still think they´re cool though, they´re not very friendly on dry land but apparently if you get in the sea they come and swim with you so i´m going to test this theory later!
Anyway, that´s probably enough information for one day! Still have no way of taking pictures off my camera - so the picture on the top is one from the websites own selection! i fear it may have to wait until i get home!
take care everybody
