Hey! So I admit that I am really behind with the blogs again, sorry. I arrived in Guadalajara early on Sunday 9th March and left early on Wednesday 12th March 2008.
I had another early morning flight from La Paz on Sunday morning, requiring me to get up at 4.45am and bid farewell to Henry. Funnily enough after hauling myself out of bed early the airport check in didn't open for a good 20 minutes after I arrived. Figures really. It was a special flight though, being the first and probably only direct one on this trip, AND I got given a chocolate donut on the flight as opposed to the usual peanuts.
Had an awful taxi ride from the airport, lets just say, terrible driver, couldn't find the hostel and got totally ripped off. Can't win them all though right? Ended up at a really nice hotel which had no dorms so I had my own room and bathroom, a towel and TV(Yay!!!) and no bugs. Good deal. Had a nap as I was a bit knackered, and then went for a wander around the city to get acquainted. Its such a photogenic place, theres a few plazas right in the center of the city and they are very pretty. That night I watched Toy Story in Spanish. Didn't have a clue what they were saying but I tried.
On Monday I went to the town of Tequila for the day for obvious reasons. I decided to go independently, handy since I'd arrived on a Sunday and couldn't book a tour as the offices were shut. The bus took around 1 hour 45 minutes and I soon found myself in the distillery paying to join the English tour at 3pm. I passed the time checking out the Tequila Museum, the town and eating lunch in preparation for the distillery tours free samples. The distillery tour did unfortunately require wearing a hairnet, not good, but there were free shots and a margarita at the end, which were very good. I have discovered that the aged tequila (darker in colour) tastes much better. Back in Guadalajara that night, I was pleased to hear English speaking voices in the kitchen so went in search of conversation. I found some nice Americans that have just started a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) course for 4 weeks. Stayed up late chatting at the kitchen table.
On Tuesday I had planned to move on but decided to stay an extra day as I wanted to go to a ballet folklorico and mariachi show during the day. I decided I'd better buy my bus ticket for the morning to make sure I left, and then after a wander and lunch I headed to Parque Agua Azul. I found myself being chatted to a lot for English practice today, in a taxi, by the park manager. Makes it harder to practise my Spanish! After the park I headed to the shows, and met Fernando and Erika who had lunch with me. They both worked at the restaurant and we got chatting after Fernando was asked to translate my Spanish- my pronounciation needs work! After the shows Fernando took me sightseeing, covering Plaza de los Mariachis and Mercado San Juan de Dios, then walking and ending up in La Priscilliana for Madonna, Vogue and cocktails. It was so much fun! Really glad I stayed the extra day.
Take care, Sarah xxx
