Granada: Magical, overwhelmingly beautiful, delicious, historical and easily my favourite place I've ever been in Spain. Arriving here on Sunday night it was love at first sight. My fantastic hostel is located in the Albaicin area, the traditional Arabic quarter of
Granada. So to get to my hostel I have to walk up many cobblestoned streets which have brilliantly smelling, vibrant and colourful Arabic markets which sell great clothes, food and jewellry.
The hostel is great, super comfortable and really fun. On my first morning I was sitting eating breakfast when a guy came in asking if I was interested in a tour to some nearby waterfalls. I signed up and was rewarded by an amazing day! We caught a bus for about half an hour out of Granada to some hills. From there, it was an 8km hike through bush, boulders and water to get to some FREEZING waterfalls. The water is sourced from the Sierra Nevada, a mountain range surrounding Granada, which despite the heat getting into the 40s in summer, has snow on the mountains 365 days a year. It was so refreshing to swim in them after a long hike in 36 degree heat. I may or may not have gotten severly sunburnt. Sorry Mum. All up a great day, followed by a great dinner party at the hostel of seafood paella.
Tuesday was a relaxing day of wandering the town, shopping and a long siesta when the temp reached 39. Went on a tapas tour at night, had some great food with great people and discovered a delicious drink, tinto de verano, red wine with sugared soda water! Dare I say it, better than sangria!
Wednesday was another laid back day, did a great walking tour in the morning and walked up through some great areas. First to the base of the Alhambra where we walked high up into the aquaducts that serve Granadas water supply. I hope the people of Granada enjoy the taste of blood in their water, after I cut my foot on some glass which then bled profousely for a while! I kind of like the idea of being blood sisters with the city of Granada!! We also walked up to the Sacromonte for a great view of Alhambra, to the cave area where people are living in some council owned caves, and high up into the Albaicin.
Currently its siesta time which I'm thoroughly enjoying after not sleeping a wink last night. Can I just touch on something here:
The Etiquette of Snoring:
If you are a chronic snorer, who also has sleep apnea, who makes noises akin to animals dying/mating/attacking each other, THEN DONT STAY IN A f***ING HOSTEL AND KEEP THE REST OF US AWAKE ALL NIGHT. Honestly.
So tonight there is another dinner party at the hostel, and a Flamenco show which starts at about 1am and is apparently the best in town, and not at all touristy! Cant wait. Am looking forward to my friend Ellen arriving tomorrow for a few more days of fun and adventures in Granada! Xxxx
