Fiji- 20 day stay.
The start of my adventures.
Fiji time! There's no rush here and no clock is the correct time.
The first week we stayed at Smugglers Cove in Nadi Fiji. It's very backpacker friendly; They have dorms, they have standard rooms and they have rooms with balconies. They have plenty on wifi connection offers but it doesn't work in the room..I think it's the concrete that blocks the signal. They have a bar/restaurant that serves good food, can be a little pricey..but you can hang out as long as you want with a view of the ocean and its all open.
We went into Nadi city and went to the supermarket we just got some basic stuff like ramen noodles, snacks,water,vodka,sprite..you know..the necessities. In every room you have a plug in pitcher that boils water and a fridge. We went down the street to Bamboo to get breakfast which is part of the horizons hotel I think..it definitely had more of the dirtier backpackers there.. We went to a Temple...Sri Siva Subramaniya. My first Temple! I had to cover my knees with a sarong and pull my hair back. It was cool but I wished there were plaques to read about what I'm looking at. There was a priest in one of the Temples saying prayer to the onlookers.
We went to the Land of the Sleeping Giant's they had a rainforest and somewhat of a orchid farm that was pretty and a little exercise. Then we went to a village of Fiji which seemed like just a money scam. You walk in this driveway you pay 10$ They have ladies with tables selling handmade jewelry then this lady walked us through and told us a little about the place then she pulled us to the side and continued to say how all the money put into the money box goes to the chief who distributes it to the village how he thinks it should be...she was a bit much looking for handouts but I guess that's what you got to do.
Then we went to a local Indian restaurant with our cab driver Veejay who became our tour guide and invited us to his home to cook traditional Indian food for us. It was SO GOOD.
Then we stayed at Wailoaloa Beach Resort... It was ok, it was a standard room with a t.v, sink and a fridge..it was cleaner. They have a tennis court, a pool and bar/restaraunt. I felt it drew more of the older people. We ended up doing shots and handing out shots....the next morning everyone was at breakfast like; ugh. ;)
Then on to the next place..
Fiji Club Resort-
We have a bungalow facing the ocean, it's very quaint. They have power shortages so one minute your fans are flying like helicopters and then 30 min later their at the lowest speed. So far today were just relaxing and drinking..ROOT JUICE we finally found some! Better known to the Fijians as Kuva. Our bartender here at the resort kept handing me bowls of the stuff....they say it makes you happy (high) and sleep like a baby. My tongue felt numb and it seemed like i just drank a few beers but whatever 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do".
Diwali (Indian holiday of the lights) "Their New Years".
Firecrackers! They buy new outfits, they clean their homes, they make sweets for their neighbors..It's a celebration.
A Whale's Tale $200 (Fje) a couple
Totally worth it! They pick you up on a sailboat, feed you breakfast, show you islands in the passing distance. Then you land on an island for about 6hrs. There's a Kuva ceremony then your off to do anything you want; kayak, snorkel, beach volleyball, lay out and they feed you a real nice lunch/dinner and did I mention OPEN BAR!! I'm sold ;)
