KINGS CANYON
Due to sleeping outside in the swags we awake frighteningly early and so are all prepared in time to set off just before 7 for the walk around the rim of Kings Canyon. This is necessary as it gets so hot that we need to have completed the 6km/3 hour walk by 10 am, plus the flies come out at this time and we didn't want a repeat of yeserday's micky taking fiasco. The initial ascent up to the top of the Canyon was quite taxing especially for two lazy, unemplyed, not done a day's exercise in six months layabouts like us, but once we reached the ridge the spectacular sights which make up the canyon are awesome and we enjoy the remainder of the walk immensely. Half way around the walk we hit upon the lush green oasis of the 'Garden of Eden' in the centre of the Canyon. We try to remember that we are in the middle of the Aus outback in one of the hottest and harshest climates on offer, as we look in front of us at the somewhat misplaced lush landscape filled with exotic trees and plants - weird, a clear triumph of nature. Mark enjoys a dip in the rock pool in the middle of the 'Garden of Eden' gorge and takes in the amazing views from right in the heart of the Canyon. The remainder of the walk navigates us along the rest of the Canyon rim and takes in more dazzling views of the surrounding landscape and the Canyon itself. The only distraction from enjoying this beautiful walk was navigating our way around and avoiding the numerous bus loads of tours that made it to the Canyon at the same un-godly time as us. Not so lazy these backpackers after all! We eventually return to the car park for 10 am on the dot which makes Mark very pleased as his geeky itenerary is on schedule. As on the previous day the remainder of the day is spent driving 'the length of England' to reach the next destination - The West MacDonnell ranges.
