Sand boarding
A great relaxed possibly lazy morning with breakfast at the hostel, sitting playing cards. we met a whole group of interesting travellers most of which would be coming sand-boarding with us later in the afternoon. Sarah decided on second breakfast while I picked up a beer with the others. We were a group from all over the world so the card games were very different. We found out about the possibility of a big BBQ dinner which included rum but we needed ten people. We started trying to get everyone we knew to join in.
We left at four, after a few beers and getting upto eight people for dinner, into the dune buggy and out to go boarding.
There were two big buggies heading out that day and we were in one with a whole bunch of old ducks. At first we thought it might make the experience a little tamer but we were wrong. They kept calling out to the driver to go crazier and he was loving it. He was about their age and he was in his element! The buggy part was more fun than either of us expected with some roller coaster like parts. There were some near verticals drops and we even parked on a very steep uphill section where the driver got out to pick up a bag one of the old ducks dropped. Sarah wasn't to fond of this position as it had a fall backwards and roll over feeling about it.
We buggied around for a fair percentage if our time, stopping to take the occasional photo, getting back in and racing off again. The dunes just kept going and it was really interesting seeing how the oasis and the Capitol of the area, Ica, fit into the environment. I don't think either of us (or anyone else in the buggy) had seen anything like this! It's worth looking at the photos to get a taste of this oasis paradise.
The buggy climbed upto the peak of a big dune and we all got out. Everyone was given some wax and a board and given the instructions, go forwards! Cheers mate, would never have got that. We all wax up the bottom of our boards and some worked out which foot will be the front one. The first attempts are interesting but with total success. Sarah was up until stopping at the bottom we ran this slope a few times while the driver tried with the old ducks.
We moved onto the bigger steeper part and headed down. It was great fun but really has too much resistance compared to snow boarding. Unfortunately for the blog neither of us crash in spectacular fashion but one person did. They decided to go on their stomach for the big slope and gained so much speed (didn't put their feet down) until they caught an edge and they turned into a cloud of sand as they tumbled around. They had sand everywhere, it was an Indian amount of sand in the hair, face, ears, mouth, everywhere.
We buggied back to Bananas hostel to find out there was 14 people down for the BBQ and it was on. There was so much vegetables and some nice meat with a cocktail and a 1l bottle of rum with 1l of coke.
After dinner I shared half a bottle of rum with one other person and we all played the card game golf.... It's hard remembering your cards with beers and half a bottle of rum!
