Up at 4:35 for a 4:45 bus to Quito, 12 hours with no tablet, no movies being shown on the bus, 40% battery on my phone, a guide book to read and a book of sudoku. I have never done more Sudoku in my life. I had many passengers next to me, the worst was a bigger local who slept for six hours and who kept leaning on me, or snoring/dying at other times. I finally arrived into Quito, all the way to the centre where I was able to walk to the hostel. Saved me $10, thanks bus man.
I checked into a odd little hostel, hostal Huauki, where I waited for Sarah to arrive. I didn't have to wait long until she arrived. She had a page from Tourist information explaining the cost of taxi's from the airport to our suburb and was arguing (quite rightly) with the driver. The hostel owner came out and didn't help but Sarah won in the end and came inside.
We caught up with tales and photos from our travels and then headed out for Ecuadorean fare. We arrived and ordered to find out two of the things we wanted were not available (two types of green plantain empanadas), and also that in Quito on a Sunday after 4pm, there is no sale of booze! So after a long long day, no golden ale or cheeky red to ease us to sleep. It was a nice dinner and an even nicer walk, the whole block and a half.
We had a night of catching up on news before heading to bed....., an interesting bed. What we hadn't yet realized was that the sheets were laid over a slippery plastic sheet and the bed mattresses were more like a hammock. As night fell and we turned the lights off we found out the room was lit like a Christmas tree with huge windows. The biggest of all the windows were the church arch doorway we had filled with glass that contained a small wooden door in the middle, not our best night sleep.
