Life in Oz!
I woke up and checked the time at it was 5:50! Oppps, I know I set my alarm but either I didn't hear it or I did something wrong. Luckily the three of us packed last night, all we had to do was throw some clothes on, and we were out the door. Fallon and Brendan had left to get the car so the rest of us had to wait for them to pick us up. We still managed to get to the airport by 6:30 like we had hoped. Brendan, Joanna and I then went back to the hostel to check out and get one last great continental breakfast of toast with jam. We got directions to the closest petrol station to fill up the tank and get the car returned by 8am. From there we had all day to explore! We started out at St. Mary's Cathedral, which was super close to our hostel but we just never made it inside. It was really pretty outside as well as inside. As we walked down the street towards Circular Quay we took time to look at some of the old buildings and wondered around inside the Hyde Park Barracks Museum. We walked through the botanical gardens and watched the huge Flying Fox bats fly around above us. Walking out of the botanical gardens brought us to the opera house where we stopped inside to see if we could see anything more than we did the other night. We only got as far as the gift shop and then left. Before leaving the opera house, I remembered Sue had told me to check out the toilets there so as the good niece I am, I did. The sinks have no drains; it looks like the water runs onto the floor behind the faucet, so I took a picture for Sue. There are heaps of things to do in the Circular Quay and it was really nice to be able to meander through it all without being in a rush. We got a day ticket for $15 that enabled us to ride any ferry, bus or train in the city for the day; we needed a way to the airport so we figured we would be able to get our moneys worth out of it. Our first destination with our ticket was Manly Beach. We heard it was a good place to visit so we jumped on the ferry and after 30 minutes we were at Manly. We strolled down to the beach long enough to take a few pictures, enjoy the view and walk back to the harbour to get back on the ferry. It was chilly and drizzly; not exactly beach weather so we didn't stay long. Once back at the Quay we all called home quick since it was still mother's day there. It was then onto The Rocks for lunch. We walked around checking out menus before we finally decided on a little Italian place. We ordered garlic bread and a pizza which were both wonderful but different then what we are used to. we needed to figure out how we were getting to the airport before it got to late. We called our hostel to ask for the shuttle again since it was $3 to get to there from the airport, it would have been $10 to bring us back and we knew we could find cheaper. We stopped at a little information kiosk and they were very helpful. They told us we would be able to take a train to a bus station and the bus would take us right to the airport. Yay. Since that was settled we took another ferry over to Darling Harbour where we were told by the info kiosk was a British Lollies shop and Cold Rock ice cream. There was a British Lollies shop near our hostel and Fallon saw that they had Reese's but we never made it during trading hours, so we told Fallon we would stop of we had a chance to get there. We headed straight for our ice cream when we got off the ferry to make sure we didn't run out of time! It is very similar to Cold Stone, they just don't have the selection of suggested mixes. You could get anything you wanted in your ice cream here, Tim Tams, fruit, peanut butter or Nutella. As we enjoyed our wonderful mixes, we moseyed towards the aboriginal artwork shop where we had stopped the other day. We looked at some of the artwork and then thoroughly enjoyed a didgeridoo performance. We then went over to the shopping centre to hunt down the British Lollies shop. It didn't take long and we got what we needed. We happened to see a bus and asked if it would get us to central station. It didn't get us all the way there but close enough that it was just a short walk. we caught a train to Bondi Junction and were hoping to have a few minutes to check out the beach but we ended up getting on the 5:07pm bus, which wasn't long after we arrived. It was a good thing we took the earlier bus instead of the 5:22 since it took just short of an hour to get to the airport and we needed to be checked in by 6:30. We sat around for a little while before the plane boarded but once it did I was out before we even took off. I was half asleep most of the 1 ½ hour flight so it went pretty fast. Once we arrived we needed to find a way back to UniCentral. It would have been too expensive to take a taxi or shuttle so we looked up the bus times and we would have had to wait a good hour before a bus came. The three of us each tried calling our roommates with no luck in getting a ride but Joanna tried again and was able to get a hold of one of hers and he came to pick us up. Luckily we didn't decide to take the bus because it was pouring most of the time we were waiting for Andy to come get us. It was almost 10 by the time we got back and we were all exhausted. I stopped by Karen's apartment and got one of my items that they brought home for me but couldn't get my bag because Kate's room looked dark and I figured she was sleeping.
