Life in Oz!
We met at 7:30 for the wonderful continental breakfast of rice krispies and toast and then got ready. We ventured off towards Paddy's Markets near Darling Harbour. On the way we stopped at car rental places to see if we could hire a car for tomorrow. Since none of us are 25 we couldn't hire anything bigger than a 5 person car. We weren't worried and continued on to the markets. It was huge. There were heaps of stands to look at. Most of them were the same after a while, t-shirts, jewellery, souvenirs and aboriginal arts and crafts. We spent an hour wondering around and then headed towards The Rocks to explore that market. Before checking out the market it was lunch time. Brendan and I wanted to try the Löwenbräu, an authentic Bavarian restaurant. The girls decided on Italian up the street. The Löwenbräu was amazing! The food was awesome, I ordered spatzle (type of noodles), which I hadn't had since I had been to Germany. Seeing as we were at a Bavarian restaurant we considered it mandatory to order a bier with our meal, it was almost like the Hofbräuhaus all over again. After both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals, we had to order desert, a selection of different types, all amazing as well. We met the girls and had 45 minutes to explore the market on our own. It was different from the other market as it had craftier things, picture frames, photo albums, paintings, jewellery as so on. The harbour bridge was very close to where the market was so we went to check it out. Since we weren't able to do the bridge climb because the times didn't work for us we went up the pylon lookout instead. The lookout is in one of the huge pillars at the end of the bridge. It was $8.50 to go up with a pretty good view of the city, not as good as what the bridge itself would have been but it was heaps cheaper, the best view we could get for that price. The bridge is gianormous, probably a bit bigger that I had thought but the opera house looks smaller than I had imagined. It was still big, but just not as large as it is depicted in pictures. We went back to the Circular Quay were we had found a cocktail cruise we wanted to take earlier in the day. When we got there and tried to book the tickets they told us it was leaving from Darling Harbour. It was almost 5pm and the cruise left at 5:30. Before we the cruise we had to book our car hire for tomorrow. While Brendan did that we tried to find a way to the other harbour. We didn't want to run (literally) over there so we checked on taking a ferry but it would only arrive at 5:45, a bus wouldn't work and by this time we had no choice but to take a taxi. We had to split into 2 cars and it ended up costing almost $5 to get there. We weren't exactly sure where we wanted to be so of course we get dropped off on the wrong side of the harbour. After sprinting across the huge bridge to the other side we made it just before 5:30. The booking office was already closed but we knocked on the door and were able to get the tickets. The cruise wasn't too spectacular. We had a good view of the bridge and opera house at night but the commentary wasn't very good, we couldn't even hear it. It was also pretty cold with the wind. It lasted for just over an hour and once it was finished we headed straight for Central Station. We needed to catch the train out to the Sydney Football Stadium for the Waratahs (Sydney) vs. Hurricanes (New Zealand) union footy game! It was a lot more work to get there than we anticipated. We weren't sure what stop we were supposed to go to and when we asked the ticket people they didn't know either. They sent us to the info desk where it took 2 people to call someone and ask where the game was playing. We finally got our tickets and a minute before the train came Brendan realized he forgot something up by the ticket place. He ran back to get it but not long after a train came. We didn't get on because we didn't see him come back. Another train came and went and finally we got on the third or fourth train without him. He was waiting for us at the station when we got off. It turned out that he went down a different stairway and jumped on the first train right before it left. It was a bit challenging to find the right bus stop and right bus but once we were on it didn't take long to get there. Someone had told us the bus stop was right outside the stadium, right outside the stadium to an Aussie is a 10 minute walk (which I told someone it would be on the bus), which is how long it should have taken us to get there had we been walking in the right direction the entire time. We got confused when the first stadium we got to was dark, but it turned out to be the cricket field, we just had to keep walking. Finally! We made it to the stadium. The game started at 7:40, it was probably close to 8:30 by the time we got there. They first told us the game was sold out and then somehow managed to find 6 tickets for us. We got in right at half time, which was perfect because we had time to grab a quick pie for dinner, there were no lines at all because everyone was in the beer lines. Kate and Fallon were in a different section from the rest of us and Joanna and Karen were up and over a row from Brendan and me. The game was heaps of fun even though some of the things going on confused me and most of the action was happening on the other end of the field. We were less than 10 rows up from the field, sitting parallel with it but behind the try (goal) line. It was a close and exciting ending but the Waratahs ended up losing anyway. We got on a bus not far from the stadium, probably where we should have gotten off the first one, and we back to the train station. We took a train to Kings Cross so we could go back to the hostel to drop our bags off that we had been carrying all day. We were all pretty tired and didn't feel like doing much so we wondered around looking for food. I ended up getting a gianormous ice cream cone. I felt like a little kid with a cone the size of my head with the top scoop about to fall off at anytime. We sat in a park eating our food and talking, less than a block away from our hostel and all of the action of Kings Cross. We headed to bed not long after so we would all be ready to go by 7am.
