Nicaragua Mission
Hi all...the first few pictures from today's album are of the drainage system along the sidewalks. It's amazing that people don't just fall in them!
This morning we went to the Ranchito at the re-nutrition centre and did a service with the children (50 kids). They had a guest speaker who provided his testimony of how he, at the age of 16, was on the wrong path in life...stealing and other bad stuff but was placed into a rehab facility and found God. He spoke so well for a young guy and had great confidence in his message. Although it was all in spanish we did have a translator. After all the kids did their hymns we did a small story about the Creation and then a craft. They were each given modelling clay to make animals and trees, flowers...anything from the creation really. We took lots of pictures of their little creatures...they had such a great time with it! We had another visitor to the Ranchito this morning as well...a gentleman and his son (Eric and Carl) They were originally from California but had a calling to come here and start building homes for people who needed them...they have been here 8 months now and it sounds like Missionary Ventures is going to partner with them to build homes in the future. He was mentioning that they can build a home for about $1000 and that it can be completed in a day or so. I really think that it would be rewarding to build a home for a family. During a conversation that Sharon was having with him she learned that one of the little girls (the one in the pictures playing Patty Wack) is currently in a very abusive home and that they are building her a home to free her from her current situation.
In today's pictures you will see a lot of trucks and buses carrying tons of people with red flags...there was a Election March for the opposing presidential candidate, Arnoldo Alemán of the Constitutionalist Liberal Party(red and white). It appears that he has a lot of followers but we learned that this is really just a way for people outside of the city to get a 'free day' in town and that they weren't necessarily going to vote for him. There are no election signs here like we would see in Canada...instead they paint the party's colours on road signs, rocks, curbs, trees, etc...I took a few pictures of that. All you see if the colour and the #1 or #2. The #2 is for the current president Daniel Ortega...he is red and black.
After we left the re-nutrition centre we ventured up into the mountains for lunch..the view was unbelievable! We stopped along the way to take pictures of Calla Lilies, Cactus, Bananas and other flowers. The small house with the threshold at the front has a bush of Bella Donnas that are absolutely stunning. There were fields full of cabbage...tough to get a good picture of that though. We also saw coffee bean fields...they are planted in amongst the bananas. Apparently the darker the leaves, the stronger the coffee! The restaurant that we stopped at for lunch provided us with a very authentic meal of beans, cheese (kinda like goat cheese, but not), and eggs and fresh tortillas. We had a chance to make our own tortillas as well...fun, fun! They were definitely the best tortillas ever!

Rebecca To think you can build a home in a day for $1000! WOW!! It would be rewarding to be able to do that for a family. Love to hear your updates and your pictures are beautiful. You and Lauren both look great and enjoying yourself! Love to you both. xoxoxoxo
Allie Callas, my favourite! I agree with you Rebecca, pretty unbelievable to think that you could provide an entire home for a family for what we consider to be a very small dollar amount. How can we help?
Kathy Hi Sara and Lauren from Mike and Kathy!! Sounds like you're all having quite an experience, one that will last a lifetime. Thanks for all the pics, it's great to see what you're seeing although rather sad in some circumstances . The people seem quite genuine and we're seeing lots of smiles in the photos...we know they all must love having you there...the tall blonde girls :) It's hard to believe you're already coming back this week...thanks for keeping us up to date, safe journey home!
