Nicaragua Mission
Our apologies for not writing over the last 2 days...we have been keeping busy and seeing lots of things! Friday was our 'free day' so we had an opportunity to see an active volcano! Because it was raining there was a great deal of steam coming from the volcano and it produced a very harsh sulphuric acid that burned our throats and hurt in our chests...we could only stay for a few minutes but we did get some cool pictures from the top of the volcano and from the museum. Lauren got some great ides for future science projects!
After the volcano we went to the market...that was fun! I didn't get any pictures of the market itself but it was definitely a sight to see. There were so many vendors and so any shoppers! We were definitely successful in negotiating our prices although it certainly is a different technique here than back home! I really hope Gracie likes what we got her...Alex too! It was Alex's birthday yesterday so we found something extra cool for him! :) I was pretty excited to hear that we were going to Poppa John's for dinner...PIZZA!!! I was definitely missing my pizza!
Yesterday we were back at the re-nutrition centre to play with the kids and I had a chance to sneak down to their gardens to take some pictures. So the gardens aren't to fully sustain the centre but it does add an excellent supplement to their diets to have some fresh foods. The property is about 6 acres and about half (or even a bit more) is gardens...there are peppers, corn, beans, bananas - red ones and a few things I couldn't make out. The guys have been working on the electrical of the Ranchito building and have it half done...we are back there tomorrow for our last visit with the children and they will finish up the lights then.
There is an excellent little coffee shop downtown that we have found...its our "Starbucks"...its trendy, clean and has an amazing menu. Lauren is hooked on the Oreo Frappuccinos! Yesterday we ran into a girl (early 20's I would say) from Georgia that has been here a year and is a member of the Peace Corp. Apparently there 200 volunteers from the Peace Corp in Nicaragua right now and they all stay 2 years. She teaches Monday to Friday and does a great deal of community work on the weekend. She said that she focuses on violence against women and educating young girls and boys about it throughout the schools and the communities surrounding Matagalpa.
It's 6:30AM here and we are just getting up to start our day. (That's 8:30 your time.) We will try to write tonight as well.
Off to church shortly.....Sara & Lauren
