Greetings from Bangkok,
Hope everyone is well, I made it! After having to return home twice on my way to London for different reasons I was beginning to doubt whether I would actually make it! Add that on top of the apprehension I had and just the general feeling of almost being physically sick I was starting to question whether going round the world was a good idea.... Luckily once I got to Heathrow that had all gone and I was back to being excited Sanj!
I got through security with minimum fuss and was hoping to get upgraded but that failed to materialise so I ended up being sat next to a middle ages Australian woman who kept kicking and elbowing me each time she moved, just as I was about to dose off and get some much needed sleep.
I did manage to get some periods of sleep but I was wide awake when I landed in Bangkok and I was surprised at how nice the airport was, especially when straight after leaving the plane the humidity hit me. Thankfully the terminal had a/c and I got through that with minimum fuss and also got a taxi straight away.
I had a really friendly driver called Mr Nattawul, he was very chatty, the only problem was his english was about as good as my thai, so we had some communication problems, but we managed to get our points across in the end. It was the Queen of Thailand's birthday today so he was telling me all about that, and showed me different events as we drove past. He told me she was 78, and I have to say she looks really good for someone who's 78! The first lesson I learnt from my travels is that I needed to learn some Thai!
We finally found the guesthouse I was staying in, which is just off Khao San Road, as soon as we reached it I saw the masses of backpackers. I settled into my room which was very simple, but clean and had a/c which was the most important thing. I decided to wander round the local area, but before leaving I decided to learn some Thai phrases that I got off my Thai language app on my Ipod.
As soon as I walked out I saw a Subway and it wasn't long before I saw the familiar golden arches of Maccies and a bit further on the Burger King sign! I decided I needed to buy some flip flops as my feet were roasting and when about trying to negotiate a deal with a street vendor for 2 pairs of fake Havianas, I managed to get them down to 300 baht, which I was told was a good deal but I'm sure that guy tells all his customers that. The people here are all very friendly.
After a bit of wandering around I decided to grab some food in a Thai cafe/restaurant and went for Thai Green Curry (original I know) but it was very nice, as was the beer which cooled me down, although I do feel a little bit tipsy after it!! After more wandering I decided to go to an internet cafe which i where I am now....
Plan for tonight is to plan my next few days in Thailand and then how I'm gonna get to Chiang Mia on Sunday.
That's all for now, been a pretty eventful 24 hours or so, I havent been able to put any photos up because I'm not sure if I can from here, and also I've only taken a few....
Right I better go do some planning, so until next time take care!!
