Hi everyone!
Cambodia has turned out to be my favourite place. We have fitted so many things in the last couple of days and are always kept going. I need a rest so I have taken a break from going for dinner with the group.
In Siem Reap we visited the landmine museum in style on a tuk tuk. It was truely an eye opening experience, and all down to one man Aki ra a former Khumer Rouge conscripted child soldier devoting his life to make Cambodia a safe place again. He is also providing assistance to landmine surivivors. The children aged 3 qand upwards with missing limbs or eyes, all live at the museum as their parents can't afford so take care of them, so musuem donations are appreciated.
After that we got our tuk tuk to a ferry and went on a boat trip to a floating village. This was also a huge eye opener for most of us. People live so simply, most of them looked happy. Some children in boats and some in bath tubs with spoons as an oar came up to us crying and begging. We stopped at a view point area and had a drink.
For dinner we ate in Khumer kitchen, it was the most delicous food I have eaten on this trip. Khumer curry...mm. Sok our Cambodian guide also took us to his house to meet his parents and brothers and sisters. They also have a crocodile farm in the back yard. 100 altogther.!
The next day we got up at 5 am and went to Angkor Wat for sunrise, unfortunatly it was too cloudy to see the sun so wasn't much. We spent the whole day in Angkor Wat, listened to our guide and took lots of pictures. We got elephant rides through the gates of Bayon Temple. We also saw Temple of Ta Prohm (for those of you who have seen tomb raider, it was filmed here). This temple located in the tropical forest is now covered with the roots of trees prying the stones apart. I'll put some pictures up soon, my battery on camera died just now.
We also saw the stones heads of Bodhisattva Avilokiteshvara! They were beautiful. Pictures coming soon!
That night Sok thought it would be a good idea if we all went to kareoke. All 7 of us who went squeezed into a tuk tuk. We went into a room with huge tv and sofas. One lady was keying in the number of the songs while another was constantly topping our beers up. Between us all we had quite a few beers, maybe 30 and they came to $7!! So cheap.
We arrived in Phnom Penh today, it's a lot more built up than Kompang Cham and Kratie, the last two places we have stayed.
Today we passed through a village where they deep fry tarantulas!! Ukk...we stopped and ladies came running with big plates of dead spiders! OUr guide ate a few and Whitney and a few others bravely ate a leg. I passed on that one!
In Kompang Cham we rented bikes, and got a raft type ferry over to an island where lots of local people lived. It was such a fantastic experience, the people are so warm and friendly, the children come running out to say hello and shake your hand. They also like sweets in return. There were a few scary moments when all twelves of us were cycling in a row and out of no where a herd of cows came running towards us. So we all had to dive into some peoples front garden. On the way back it began to rain, and lots of people slipped and few people fell off bikes (excluding me for once)! We had another herd of cows and a few horses running towards us on the way back. Great fun!
Yesterday we were in a town called Kratie and our guide rented us motor bikes. We were on the back (don't worry mum). It was so much fun and was my first time on a motor bike. We arrived at a boat and went to spot some Irwaddy dolphins in the Mekong River. Unfortunatly I didn't get a good picture, they are much larger than salt water dolphins. And there are only 80 left in Mekong River. We were then escorted home on our bikes, and went for dinner in a Western restaurant. I had some pasta, we're all bit tired of fried rice and noodles. Phew thats long one! Time to sleep now! Speak to you all soon. Miss you xx
