Hi all. We have had a busy last few days, travelling from Townsville to the Sunshine Coast.
Our first stop was Bowen, where Smiley had lived for a few months as a kid. I thought Bowen was a lovely little place and we chose to stay at Horseshoe Bay, which had a nice beach with close access to part of The Great Barrier Reef. The kids and I hired some snorkeling gear and had a dip. Unfortunately the water was quite choppy so we couldn't see a lot of fish but we did get to see some of the reef itself. We had a very enjoyable afternoon cooling off there and also at one of the more protected beaches around the point. It would have been great to stay for a few days but time is really starting to run out so we made the most of the one day/night there. The caravan park was located in a bush setting and the animals came out to make themselves known. Jess had fun catching Geckos and Green Tree Frogs that night, they were everywhere. The next morning we had a brilliant show from a male Peacock who was strutting his stuff for all to see. He was very handsome indeed but he made a shocking noise, typical male. We packed up and headed off for a big 450 km's drive to a free camp at Carmila Beach.
We arrived at Carmila Beach mid arvo and discovered that it was a very popular place. All the good beachside spots were taken but we found a great spot in the bush and set up camp away from the crowd, with a couple of bush turkeys as our only neighbours. We then hit the beach for a bit of footy and a splash around, nice way to finish the day after the long drive.
Up and off the next morning to another free camp at Granite Creek. This camp wasn't the nicest we have been to, as there was no access to the creek from the camp and the traffic noise from the Bruce Highway was breaking the serenity in a big way! Still, it was free and a place to rest after another 400-odd km's.
The next day's drive was to Tin Can Bay. We decided to pop into Hervey Bay for a look. We were expecting a cute little seaside village but no, this place was huge! Found our way out of there and headed through Maryborough to Tin Can Bay. The town itself isn't much, but we wanted to be there for the daily morning dolphin feeding. Up nice and early the next morning and walked to Dolphin Cove where a couple of dolphins were already waiting for the 8am feeding. For the very cheap price of $5 per head we were given a bucket with a couple of fish and under the guide's instructions we were able to hand feed these beautiful creatures. This was a truly amazing experience. Poor Jess had a bit if trouble with a Cormorant who tried to grab her fish every time she took it out of the bucket, but a fella with a broom soon fixed that cheeky little sod up and Jess got to have another go at feeding the other dolphin.
Once this was finished we walked back to the caravan park and packed up. Our trip was to be a short one today to Nan and Pa's on the Sunshine Coast. So here we are now, staying in their apartment and loving the space after 2 months crammed into our little camper. The kids have been swimming in the pool this afternoon and Adz has already lined me up for a session in the gym at 7am tomorrow...yawn, maybe I should change all the clocks back a couple of hours to get a sleep-in! Night all :)
