Today we made a snap decision to head over to Magnetic Island for a look. It's just so close to Townsville, only a 20 minute ferry ride, so it was too good an opportunity to miss.
The kids didn't know we were surprising them with a trip over there and were so excited when we told them. Our island package deal for the day included return ferry trip and the hire of a topless car all for $149, which was a bit of a splurge but still excellent value for money.
We set off on the ferry ride. It was a bit lumpier than I had expected and I was a bit concerned that Jess the spewer was going to erupt, but she handled the trip well. After disembarking at Nelly Bay we wandered over to Topless Car Rentals and picked out the cutest toy car with pink accents. I think it was a little Daihatsu Charade made into a convertible, very tiny and cute and you felt like your bum was scraping on the ground as you drove along. It was a real novelty and just heaps of fun.
So it was time to start exploring. We headed first to Picnic Bay where we had a picnic lunch (how predictable, such conformists!) Next was a drive to Horseshoe Bay which was stunning and obviously the place to be as all the main watersports were set up there. Adam, Jess and I enjoyed a quick dip to cool down and then we soaked up some sun and the grown ups had a Bulmers Cider to celebrate being in such amazing surroundings.
Next stop was Alma Bay, which I thought was even prettier than Horseshoe Bay. The kids went mad climbing up the huge rocks and I went off exploring rock pools. The water was quite warm and there were plenty of little fish swimming about. This was just a great place for sitting and relaxing too, so Smiley took care of that job.
We visited Bremmer Point to have a look at the Rock Wallaby colony. Cute little fellas and very tame, posing for photos and generally nonplussed about us humans.
We were really tempted to stay the night on the island but thought it would be best to return the car and hop on the ferry back to Townsville. After all, we can always return in years to come. I convinced Smiley to only drive a short distance as we were all b*****ed so we have stopped at Alligator Creek, about 20 km's out of Townsville. The free camp here is at the roadhouse so there is a decent amount of road noise but it has the best facilities of any free camp we have been to so far. There is a TV lounge, showers and toilets that are clean and they flush!!!!! Hallelujah! I don't think the noise will be too much of a problem as it is only 7.30 and we are thinking about hitting the sack already...party animals! Yawn...nite :)
