We made it to the NT!
Had a great (long) drive in from Coober Pedy on Sunday. Spent pretty much the entire day in the car racking up the km's but also seeing heaps of incredible things along the way. Here was I thinking that the landscape would be desolate and unchanging, but it varied so much, from the lunar scape out of Coober Pedy, to areas which had large amounts of spinifex grass, mulga bushes and desert oaks. We also had the opportunity to do some wildlife spotting. Jess was excited to see some brumbies and the amount of bird life was incredible. I saw more Wedge-tailed Eagles in a few hours than I have seen in my whole life! They aren't fazed by cars either, just stay focused on their meal by the side of the road.
We stayed Sunday night at Curtin Springs Station, which is on about 1.6 million acres and was a great free camping spot for us as we could have our first campfire for the trip. I didn't particularly like the resident emu there who just wandered through all of the camps as it wished...those things scare me!
Had a nice short trip on Monday into Yulara which is the resort town before entry to the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Got ourselves set up, broke a stabilizer bar on the camper (insert grumpy face here) but all will be fine as we will just try to find more level sites to set up on down the track, no biggie.
Drove into the national park to have a look at that bloody big rock that everyone talks about and as expected it was stunning! None of us were interested in or game enough to attempt climbing it, as it was so much higher and steeper than I could have ever imagined. Did have a bit of a walk along the trail at the base, before the heat sent us packing back to the car. Watched the rock change colors at sunset and toasted the occasion with a glass of Fanta (booze is more expensive than petrol here!)
On today's agenda was a morning drive out to Kata Tjuta which was beautiful, slightly disappointed that most of the lookouts were closed today due to burning off. Hit the pool this afternoon, where I lazed in the sun and Jess braved a dip in the icy water. The boys just did their own thing back at camp. Was great to catch up with fellow Portlanders the McDonalds by the pool. Had a top night by the campfire with some new friends and now it's off to bed so we can hit the road for Kings Canyon early in the morning.
