After our disappointment with the train we finally arrived in Hsipaw.
We spent the first day exploring the area on bikes that we rented.
There was not a great deal to see but like everywhere in Myanmar it was just nice embracing the culture.
On the second day we had signed up for a ten hour trek. We met our guide for the day (Win) at 7.30am and off we set, hoping it would stay dry. The route took us through rice paddies, tea plantations and local villages. Win explained how the locals used various different plants for medicinal purposes and even mixed one with whiskey for strength.. That's where I've been going wrong!
We had lunch at a lady's house in one of the villages. Tea leaf salad and tree bark salad were the main dishes on offer and it turns out they're not too bad.
We had a great day and were lucky to have a really charming, knowledgeable guide. We also managed to stay dry!
The next day we headed to the local market to get some walking boots that Win had recommended to us. When I say walking boots they were more like unfashionable khaki green converse with a thick sole but they would save our trainers getting even more ruined and for £1.80 they were worth a try.
We chilled out for the rest of the day before catching the bus to our next destination.
