We arrived at Letchworth at 6:30am with no one on the entrance to take our money. There was a sign in the window saying go in if no one present so We headed in only interested in finding out the camping situation then getting a decent sleep but it turned out the visitors center didn't open till 8:30am.
We decided to get the cameras out and see the stuff we wanted to see in the park before heading to the visitors center when it opened and finding out the camping was full. Having already seen the park we wanted to see we left and looked for a couple of other parks to try using the sat nav.
Arriving at the first it seemed strange when we pulled in, like something out of a horror film! We got out and walked to the door seeing a few people sat around a table indoors. Inside it looked aged with loads of round tables inside and random stuff pinned up on the walls that was half falling down. As I reached for the handle on the door I said to Rich are we actually going to stay here if we can?He was obviously thinking what I was because he replied no so we turned and started walking away. As we walked down the stairs I could hear the people inside moving towards the door. They opened the door and said can we help you? I explained we was looking for campsites to stay which they then explained it was a child's campsite and that another one up the road was a proper one so we thanked them and was on our way feeling relieved to get out of there as quick as possible.
Arriving at this next campsite we read on the signs it was members only so decided to get some fuel as we was low now then get something to eat and decided what to do.
At the gas station we paid $30 to fill the car up then got a couple of breakfast bagels in there with the guy who was really nice telling us he guarantees them to be brilliant or we can return them for a full refund. They were good that's for sure then we decided to head to the other state park we wanted to see, this one being Watkins Glen.
On the route I passed a sign which I briefly saw and thought it said 'sugar' and 'free' so I said to Rich I'm sure that said free campsite. It was about 18 minutes from Watkins Glen so we turned around and got to the sign which indeed read 'Sugar Hill free recreational area' so we drove up to find a lovely little campsite which was indeed free! When I checked on my phone it was one we had planned to stay at so we got the tent out and went straight to sleep for a few hours!
Waking up around 5pm we got sorted then made some rolls out of what we had in the car although everything was warm and sweaty by now but we figured we didn't have much choice so just hoped for the best!
We made a fire and spent the evening with a couple of beers by the fire before turning in pretty early and not waking up with food poisoning so all was well.
