On the way to Rotorua we stopped at Karangahake Scenic Reserve where we did a 30 minute walk around. There were 2 swing bridges that we had to cross and a one kilometre railway tunnel that we followed through the sides of the cliffs. It was so dark inside that our bus driver recommended taking a torch but our wind-up ones were not worth having as they were running out of power so we were walking in pitch black.. it was quite scary not knowing where to walk! When we got out the other side of the tunnels the views were amazing as you are in a cliff and there is a stream running below. It was very pretty.
Our next stop of the day was Hobbiton. This was the area that The Lord of the Rings was filmed in. The village scenes were filmed here and it was so cool to be there. We had a photo taken next to Gollum also!
Rotorua is famous for its natural hot springs and boiling mud pools and because of this the whole town stinks of egg! It was disgusting and kind of made you feel sick! It wasnt pleasant but something that we got used to. We were only staying there for one night. We didnt go and see the natural hot pools because even though they are natural you had to pay $25 to see them and we thought that was a bit much so we smelt them for free instead!
We stayed in a really nice BASE hostel and the the evening just chilled out as we were leaving at 8:30am the next morning..its all go go go!
