heyyy
just got back from my 3 day 2 night self drive tour of fraser island!! what a crazy 3 days we have had.
we had our briefing on thursday and then went off to pack our little bags to take with 3 days worth of clothes etc and get ready for the morning. a very early start breakfast at 7 so an early night was needed. however, just as im falling asleep 2 drunk guys who are sleeping in our room come in turning the lights on and everything and one goes in to the bathroom and the other gets into bed. the bed in the bed falls straight asleep and starts snoring very loudly and the one in the bathroom also falls aslepp assumingly on the toilet and also begins to snore very ludly. after a few more hours of chaos when the one in bed keeps trying to get into the bathroom every 10 minutes and is confused as to why its always locked not knowing his mate is asleep in there i finally fell asleep at about 3 o'clock. 3 hours later when my alarm went off i was not a happy bunny haha.
we quickly got dressed and had the free breakfast of pancakes yummy and headed out for our next breifing at 7.30am. we had to pack up all the cars ourselevs which involved putting all the tents, sleeping bags, rucksacks, food, cooking equipment and booze on the roof and tying a water proof cover securely over it. we were in groups of 11 in the cars with 3 seats in the front and 8 in the back. very cosy haha. we listened to all our instructions and then we were off to catch the ferry over to fraser island.i still cant quite belive they just leave you over there with their cars and their equipment and everything its madness, but they do!
a guy in our group drove us off the ferry and then we were off on the sand all the way to the top of island. the weather was pretty crap for the whole trip with grey clouds and showers and so the driving conditions were pretty crap. after an hour we stopped at a little campsite that had toilets and swapped drivers and then it was my turn!! haha imagine me driving a huge 4wd across the beach with 10 passengers, it was carnage haha. its actually really tough beucase where the water has washed up unevenly it made the sand so bumpy and if you went over too fast the people in the back were all over the place. also there was tons of big drops in the sand which you didnt see until you were basically on top of them called wash outs. they were really dangerous and we went over a few small ones and it was painful! i drove us to the big wreck that is halfway up on the beach which is a massive ship that was being taken to be destroyed many years ago but ended up getting stuck on fraser beach so they left it there cos its kinda cool like the case of a pirate ship. spooky at night i reckon. so we swapped drivers there and i went back to the bumpy back for the rest of the day while we explored the island and eventually pulled up in the dunes to camp!
we set up all of the tents and cracked open the goon straight away and then one of the other groups from our hostel saw us so they came and camped with us and we made a big campsite with a tarpe for shelter and the 4wd had ipod connections so we had music and light it was pretty cool. we cooked steak and salad for tea which was yummy and washed the dishes with sand and salt water, just like shepwrecked it was!! the rest of the night was spent getting to know each other and drinking far far too much goon!!!
the next morning we had to get up early and cook breakfast and set off for 8.30. i was feeling very worse for wears so i sat up front where it was a little less bumpy!! we went to inskip point wher we climbed a big hill and looked over the whole island, god theres a lot of sand in one place there!! never seen so much in all my life. we also looked for whales but didnt see any then we were off again! we drove to lake mackenzie next which was gorgeous and invovled some off roading in the 4wd which was funny but not good with a hangover haha. it was disapointing that it was so grey and rainy at the lake but we still all got in as it was the closest we would get to a shower!! also its infused with tee tree so it makes your skin feel lovely! cold though!
after there we found a new camp for the night. we decided on luxury and went to a real campsite with toilets and running water!! lovely. we set up camp once again and we even had a picnic table to chill on. we had a few hours of sleeping and reading and listening to music and then we started on tea. asian chicken stir fry with rice for tea, very yummy and huge portions we couldnt believe how much food wed been provided with and our resources were really good. we had a little stove and pots and pans and even a griddle! we sat out playing cards and generally dossing about until bedtime. unfortunatley i wasnt able to face alcohol after that first night so i was much more uncomfortable going to bed on the ground stone cold sober haha it was soooo uncomfrotable. luckily it was warm though and dry so cant complain really!
up early again this morning and set off for the ferry. packed up all the car again which takes a while. i made every1 toast on the griddle over the stove for breakfast which went down well. chilled on the beach for a bit while we waited for our 1 o'clock ferry and nearly feel asleep in the truck and then we were back to the maninland on rainbow beach heading for the petrol station!! it cost us 6 quid each in petrol which was sound and then we had to clean out and sort out the trucks before we oculd finally come back to the hostel and have a lovely hot shower. heaven.
off to hervey bay for a couple of night tomorrow and then town of 1770. after that we have another adventure on the boat on whitsundays so looking forward to that one!!
hope every1 is well
