Back to Sydney for the second time this trip. This time I was here for 9 days as that seems to be the least number of days you can book a hostel for in Sydney over the new year period.
Sarah, Georgia and I arrived on the night bus from Byron Bay at 8am. Everyone in the hostel was asleep when we got there so we headed out to have a look around the city. We met up with Ryan and saw the Opera House, Harbour bridge etc. We went out for a few drinks and then met up with Alex before heading out for a night out in Sydney!
Over the next few days we went to Bondi beach and buried Ryan in the sand! We also went to the powerhouse museum which was ok but not the most amazing museum I've seen!
Soon enough it came to the day we'd all been waiting for - New Years eve! After a stressful couple of hours on the evening of the 30th we decided to head to Balmain earlyish in the morning. We got there at 11 or so and found a small patch of grass. We set up camp and had beers and sandwiches pretty much all the way through to 9pm. The weather was perfect, sunny and clear. At 9 they put on a load of fireworks for the families with young kids. These were pretty damn good on their own! A few more hours later and the countdown began, although I think it was only the 6 of us counting down! The fireworks were amazing, glad I got to see them in real life as opposed to on TV for once!
The day after we just headed to the beach for a relaxing day and then the next day we all went to the Blue Mountains. It was a two hour train ride there but we had pretty good weather when we arrived. We jumped on a bus that takes you around to some of the popular spots. We had a couple of small walks and then we started one that should have taken 20 mins. Before we realised what had happened we were halfway down the valley going down what seemed to be the never ending staircase! We eventually hit the bottom and we were literally right underneath the 3 sisters rock formation and then it started chucking it down. We then found out it was a 90 minute walk back up another load of stairs or a train ride to the top. Sarah and Georgia opted for the train whilst Kathy, Ryan and I went for the walk. It took us right under a waterfall which was cool. Everyone was pretty hungry so we went back to the station and found a pub that served food. A long day after the 2 hour train ride back but a wicked day!
Soon enough it was my last full day in Sydney before heading off to Perth. We decided to head to the circus that was on in town. I've never been to a big circus before so didn't really know what to expect. It was really impressive! I'm never going to be able to explain in words what they did but the finale was a sphere with a diameter of about 10 meters. They then put 2 motorbikes in and had them both racing around inside it at the same time. They then gradually added another 3 bikes so they had 5 bikes in all. It was completely insane but entertaining!
Next day I was off to Perth for my last week in Oz. Big thanks to Sarah, Georgia, Ryan, Kathy and Amy for a really good time in Sydney :-)
