20th September 2009 - 22nd September 2009
We arrived in Granada after an easy 2 hour bus trip and decided to stay at Oasis Hostel. It is in a great old building with a pool to combat the immense heat and we met up with our friends, Carlo and Toni from Leon.
As we walked around the beautiful buildings we first saw a security guard bend over 90 degrees in front of us to inspect a local "bootie" that just passed him. We had a laugh about it but then I noticed that there was no shame in many other guys checking out Nikki, even as cars drove past both driver and passenger would be facing the sidewalk. Perving seems to be A.O.K in Granada.
Lake Granada is a short walk away from town. It's about 100kms across so you can't see the other side and there is a huge volcano nearby that many years ago spewed rock into the lake forming 300 small islands and many are now lived on by the rich. We caught a boat ride to check them out and found many were only the size of a normal house block. We thought we would find it too isolated for us to live there but one family we saw seemed to be having a great time. On one island an old jolly man held a puppy on the wall for us to see. He then proceeded to pull more puppies out of his 'bag' and pile them onto the wall. We're still not sure how many he had but we saw at least 10 of them. After we finished our tour we walked back into town. Along the way Nikki cut her foot on a piece of metal sticking out of the ground. I don't think we'll ever get used to the hazardous pathways of some of these countries we're visiting.
Along the main strip of restaurants there are many people performing for money from noisy religious groups to break dancers. There was a big group of break dancers from 5 -25 years of age that were great. Often the older guys in the group would do a pose and the little kid would climb up and do a hand stand on top of them. It made for some great entertainment whilst we ate our dinner but they were simply too fast for us to get any decent snaps.
After two nights we were ready to get back into the water so we headed onto San Juan del Sur for some more surfing.
