We arrived in Vientiane on a local bus from Vang Vieng. It was our first local bus in a while and made for a very hot and sweaty ride with no air con. Vientiane is the capital of Laos and it'd be fair to say that there's not a whole lot there. We spent our first day riding around on pushbikes trying to arrange our Cambodian visas. On one of our rides we stopped off for some lunch and ended up eating noodle soup with pig's blood. Sammy was not a happy man at this point and spent about half an hour complaining about the country and their lack of sidewalks amongst other things. On another ride we found a water park which we were very happy to see. We decided to head there the next day whilst waiting for our visas.
The water park was practically deserted and we could go on one ride after the other without having to wait in a line. The toilets didn't have running water and half the rides weren't in operation but it was still a good day. Sammy also found some local kids to throw the ball and Frisbee with.
That night we went for a ride to watch the sunset on the river. In the middle of dinner it started pouring with rain and storming so we rode through the puddles back to our hostel trying to splash each other. We were absolutely soaked by the time we got back but were smiling ecstatically and Nikki announced that 'Bikes are better than feet'. Music to Sammy's ears!
We picked up our Cambodian visas the next day and were out of there that night after a brief catch up with our friends Matt, Sian and Felicity once again!
