As we docked at the boat landing in Pakbeng we were greeted by several touts wanting to accommodate everyone coming off the boat. We were approached by a nice lady who took us to a great guesthouse where we only had to pay 100 baht a night (our cheapest accommodation so far). The room was clean and we were pretty happy until the generator was turned off at about 10pm and we were left with no fan. It ended up being okay though as it was a fairly cool night.
Earlier that night we had dinner at a hotel where Sam ate some Buffalo steak. It was more cut up meat than steak but still quite tasty. We had a brief look around town but couldn't find too much action so we went back to the hostel for some hot chocolate and relaxing.
The next day as we were walking down to the boat for our second day of the trip we realized we'd actually missed the main part of the town! Oh well, hopefully we didn't miss out on too much. The second day of the journey was 8 hrs and we were fortunate to get on the boat early enough to get some good seats on the floor up front. The boat was crowded again so we were very lucky and it made the trip a lot less painless than it could have been. The scenery was pretty much the same as the previous day and we spent most of the trip listening to music, reading, talking or sleeping which isn't a bad way to travel.
